Colin Angus takes the term Monumental Effort and launches it into another stratosphere. Usually accompanied by his wife Julie, Colin has completed a myriad of adventure expeditions, but in my opinion, the most remarkable was his attempt at circumnavigating the globe using only muscle power. In an effort to promote green transportation, Colin used only human self-propulsion to cover some 43,000 km around the planet.
The challenges faced to complete a journey of this magnitude are innumerable. Logistically, coordinating shipment of equipment and supplies to often remote locales and acquiring visas for entry into some countries required over two years of planning. They also encountered obstacles in securing financing, and Colin’s friendship with initial expedition partner, Tim Harvey, was really put to the test.
The physical and mental demands required to achieve such a goal are simply mind-boggling. Angus and Harvey had to cycle from their homes in British Columbia to Alaska, row up the Yukon River and eventually across the Bering Sea. Once back on land, Tim and Colin crossed Siberia, on foot, bike and skies, during the coldest and harshest months. When this partnership finally severed, Julie met Colin in Russia to complete the bike trek across Eurasia. In Portugal, they then loaded their rowboat and traversed the Atlantic Ocean during hurricane season and eventually cycled back up to Vancouver through Central America and Western United States. Brushes with wildlife, forest fires, extreme climate, and ocean liners did not deter the duo from persevering and completing this grueling voyage. The video images from Angus Adventures Films will leave you speechless as they narrowly escape death on more than one occasion.

Dean, I just completed Julie Angus’ book “Hurricane in a Rowboat” which was quite good. I’ll be posting a review soon. I think Vince read Colin’s book.
I also bought the video “Beyond the Horizon”. Although some of the shots are incredible, the book is much better. Review to follow in the coming weeks!
